“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Rusticus is less like a summer camp, and more like a work gang.  The central focus is on helping the individual understand that he controls his life and is responsible for it.  The manner in which this is done, is through a combination of hard work, and considered reflection.

In terms of hard work, attendees will engage in those activities generally regarded as traditionally manly.  This might include log cabin or post and beam construction, landscaping, mechanical work, masonry, among others.  Also, skills such as cooking, sewing, cleaning, blade sharpening, fire-making, self defense, and outdoor survival may be encountered.

While hard work is intended for the attendees to learn about themselves, introspection is probably more important to that end.

Each person will engage with what they think of their world.  The mentors are there to provide wisdom to those considerations.  At any time, activities may cease, in order for important discussions to occur.  Mentors will offer of their own perspectives, but also share the lessons from the great thinkers of history.

Any ideas are open for discussion at Rusticus, so topics will range from charity to oppression.  Every religion, philosophy, crime, and virtue are equally considered.  The point is for attendees to develop the ability to draw their own conclusions and become independent thinkers.

Rusticus is organized into pods, which are five attendees and a mentor.  Mentors are men of achievement, from any walk of life, who hold a common belief; that each person is responsible to understand his place in the world.  There might be any number of pods at a session, but each attendee can plan on being with four fellows and a mentor.

Each pod will be scheduled for chores, on a rotating basis.  Some days they make a meal for the rest of Rusticus, clean the bath house, or rise early for calisthenics, before the day begins.  On other days, they will be able to sleep in, as other pods take their turns at the tasks.

Monday through Friday are work days.  Saturdays are for playing and entertainment.  Sundays are for relaxing, writing letters, reading, and going for walks.
